What to Expect in Online Therapy

Starting therapy often comes with questions about the process, the pace, and what sessions will actually feel like. Whether this is your first time in therapy or you’re returning after a break, knowing what to expect can help reduce uncertainty.

I offer online therapy for women in Boise, Idaho and Washington, and my goal is to make the process feel as clear, supportive, and approachable as possible.

Before Your First Session

We will first schedule your free, no commitment 15-minute consultation call. This is where you will have an opportunity to ask questions and decide if you would like to move forward.

Before our first official session, you will complete intake paperwork and receive instructions for accessing our secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. If you have questions about logistics, insurance, or scheduling, those can be addressed ahead of time or during a free consultation. If you are using insurance, I am happy to run an insurance check in order to determine your benefits and your estimated out-of-pocket cost for therapy services. Information on rates and insurance can be found here.

You don’t need to prepare anything specific, just a private space where you feel comfortable.

Your First Therapy Session

The first session is a chance to:

  • Get to know each other

  • Share what’s bringing you to therapy

  • Discuss your goals and concerns

  • Collaborate on the best approach for treatment

  • Ask any additional questions you may have

  • Determine session frequency and reserve your recurring appointment slot

There’s no pressure to share everything at once. We move at a pace that feels respectful and manageable for you.

Ongoing Therapy Sessions

Therapy is collaborative and flexible. Some sessions may focus on coping tools for anxiety or emotional regulation, while others may explore deeper patterns or past experiences.

If EMDR therapy is part of our work, we’ll spend time preparing and building safety before moving into processing. You are always in control of the pace. Sessions are typically weekly or bi-weekly.

Online Therapy: What It’s Like

Online therapy offers the same level of care as in-person sessions while allowing greater flexibility. Sessions are held through a secure video platform, and many clients find it easier to open up from their own space.

Online therapy works especially well for anxiety and life transitions and helps accommodate busy schedules, caregiving responsibilities, or emotional fatigue.

Is Therapy Right for Me?

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. In fact, going to therapy proactively can be very beneficial for your mental health. Many clients seek support for stress, anxiety, identity changes, or simply wanting to feel more grounded and connected.

If you’re unsure, a free 15-minute consultation can help you decide if therapy feels like a good next step.
